Christmas campaign for PAR shelter
The freezing weather has arrived in Tg-Jiu and engulfed Carmena and Patricia’s shelter. Although it hasn’t snowed as much as here in Finland, the cold nights in particular trouble the dogs. The warehouse of the shelter is already full of dogs that need to get warm and Carmena has also taken several shelter dogs to her own home to much warmer conditions.
During winters the warehouse building has been heated with radiators and fans. There has to be many of them in order to heat the place up and since they are in a heavy use the apparatuses tend to break quickly. For safety reasons the electric heaters can’t be left on during nights which means that the nights in the warehouse are pretty much as cold as in everywhere else.
Carmena and Patricia have planned to install a boiler that can be heated with wood. They have already found a suitable one, costing 350 euros. The boiler has to be installed properly with a flue and chimney. Of course the roof, windows and door of the warehouse have to be fixed and patched so the heat from the boiler would stay better inside the building. Carmena and Patricia have contacted the installers and handymen to get the job done quickly. Warm water would make it easier to treat the dogs which is why the women dream of getting a water heater. The boiler and water heater are the kinds of purchases that can be taken with when the current shelter will possibly move to someplace else.
PAR has also bought some straws to the shelter to be put inside the dog houses to give the dogs some warmth. The straws are naturally used also for Dona and Daria in their stable. They also bought hay for the horses for the winter, costing 400 euros. In addition to this the women have bought material to cover the new dog houses from the rain.
Last night I had a long talk with Carmena and promised to try to help them get those important things to the shelter. I believe that if we here in Finland could get the funds to cover the costs, that would be a really great Christmas gift for PAR shelter. The costs from purchases with necessary installing and renovating will probably be around 1500 euros.

About the dog house campaign
We have gotten 490 euros (by Dec 9th) for the dog house campaign in October. All the materials cost ca. 950 euros which means that we have covered over half of the costs. Thank you all for donating for this cause!
General news
Carmena is trying to get the local tv-channel to broadcast an appeal for the locals to adopt a dog from PAR shelter and help in other ways, too. Hopefully the appeal will be broadcasted and it would bring lots of positive things.
Patricia has negotiated with a couple of local shopping centres to hang an about 2-m-high poster to a visible spot to encourage people to remember homeless dogs and cats on Christmas time. The purpose of the poster is also to get people to consider adopting a dog from PAR shelter.
The two workers that started in mid-November at the shelter have both suddenly gone away. Luckily there has been a pair of helping hands in addition to Vasile at shelter for a week now. The problems caused by the shelter employees are so common for Carmena and Patricia that they don’t even remember to mention whether someone has left the job or someone new has begun the work unless I ask about it. The constant worrying if anyone is going to come to work in the morning must be exhausting and frustrating for the women.
A professional magazine related to veterinary medicine has asked Patricia to write articles to the animal protection section. Of course, Patricia is very delighted about this. The problem is that there is so little time for these extra tasks especially now when Patricia’s studies keep on getting more demanding. However, I’m sure that the network Patricia is able to build through her studies, give her and Carmena the much needed extra help when it comes to animal protection issues.
Carmena is already eagerly waiting for the spring when we have promised to travel to the shelter. She said she misses terribly her Finnish friends.

Now you can go and send greetings to Carmena and Patricia via Facebook! Pro Animals Romania is now on Facebook too!
SEPA-payments
Next year we will adapt SEPA-payments which slightly changes the donations for PAFi, too.
PAFi’s SEPA-payment account is FI08 5045 0620 0918 15
Please, remember to add a message to every donation (e.g. Euro campaign, new shelter, shelter godparent, goddog fee/sponsor dog etc.). This helps us to direct the donations to right “sub-accounts” and we can easily keep track of e.g. the funds for campaigns and goddog fees.
Wishing you a peaceful Christmas time,
Kiia
