It’s been nearly a month since we returned from the shelter and from what I’ve heard, it seems like everyone has a strong yearning to go back.
I’ll start by telling that Pirjo and Toni, our travelling companions from the previous shelter trip, are heading back to the shelter already in late-May. Pirjo is planning on staying for about a week and Toni will spend his summer holiday, about 4 weeks, at the shelter. Carmena and Patricia are very excited to have such pleasant company for June since Patricia is still studying in June and tries to make up for the tests she missed in the beginning of the year because of being too busy at the shelter. This means she has to spend a lot of time in her school of veterinary medicine in Timisoara.
Shelter greetings
There has been already another spaying & neutering- day at the shelter during a short period of time. A trusted vet came from Craiova to help at the shelter. Carmena and Patricia like taking dogs to this particular vet but the drive to Timisoara is quite long. It’s also hard to take several dogs to the vet at the same time. Now this vet in question had wanted to come to the shelter to help out and a week ago he spayed several dogs as well as operated and consulted other dogs in need.
Here’s the vet from Craiova doing his work at the shelter and a little one that has been given help.

We’ll be enjoying some other good news, too, as the vet whose returned to Tg-Jiu is planning on setting up a veterinary clinic. This vet who has come back from New Zealand kept his clinic there for ten years. The vet has promised to cooperate with the shelter and already participated in helping dogs the previous week. The vet from Craiova has also promised to help this other vet in cooperating with the shelter.
This piece of news has really been great for us since for so long we have tried to find a qualified, dependable vet to the shelter, a person that would also care about the welfare of homeless dogs. Let’s hope for the best! However, we have to remind ourselves that working with the vets is not free of charge and Carmena and Patricia will need our support in order to cover all the costs from veterinary care and consultations.
This year the shelter has not been given food donations from the Brigitte Bardot Foundation. Carmena has been in contact with their representative in Romania but they have not promised to give any supplies. The extra food taken to Tg-Jiu from Finland in March won’t last for much longer which is why we hope to get e.g. new sponsors to secure the welfare of the dogs – both medical care and food. We here in Finland are the only safety the dogs got in addition to Carmena and Patricia so, please, spread the word e.g. about shelter sponsorship!
Finding a site for the new shelter
The search for the lot for the new shelter has been put on hold for some time since the local agents got bored of the fact that no lot was suitable for the new shelter. It must be difficult to understand that we are not able to pay a lot of money for the site and cheap lots just haven’t been suitable for the new shelter. At the moment Carmena and Patricia have been offered an area c. 20.000 sq meters. The site has two owners; one asks 1 e per sq m, the other 3 e per sq m. The site has electricity and would be quite suitable as the new place for the dogs. Sure, the area is quite narrow but at the same time very long. Long and narrow lots seem to be typical in Romania. Unfortunately the owner asking more per square meter owns ¾ of the area which makes the price of the site out of our reach unless the price is lowered. Carmena and Patricia have offered to pay 1e per sq m of the whole area so let’s keep our thumbs us and hope that a miracle will happen!
Vets’ equipment for Patricia
Patricia has progressed in her studies to the point that she’d be able to use some equipment the vets use. We have collected a couple of microscopes but a lot more is needed. The future cooperation with the vets would also be a lot easier if the shelter had some basic equipment so the vets wouldn’t have to carry everything with them. Used equipment would be more than welcome and we’d love to take them to the shelter if we manage to get some. You can read and write about this project on PAFi Forum. Of course you are also welcome to join the forum community to discuss other topics too!
