2008-08-08 News

Hi everyone!

A lot has happened - both in here as well as in Tg-Jiu - since the last newsletter!

The rise of the goddog fee and Shelter Godparenting

As we already mentioned in our last newsletter, after a long and careful consideration we have decided to raise the goddog fee to 15 euros per month starting on the 1st of January 2009. The reason for this is e.g. that since the general price level in Romania has developed over the past few years, with 10 euros per month we cannot cover the costs of any necessary treatments in addition to dogs' daily meals anymore.

A while ago there was a lively discussion going on in PAFi's forum of the subject in question. Based on this discussion we developed so-called Shelter Godparenting that aims at securing the overall welfare for every dog at the shelter. Many of the +400 homeless dogs already have Finnish godparents of their own but for many different reasons it's impossible for every dog of the shelter to have a godparent.

With a monthly goddog fee of 5 or 10 euros the shelter godparent supports that the shelter dogs get e.g. food, basic treatments, neutering and after-care ordered by the vet. Of course the shelter godparent also gets his/her name on PAFi's homepages. You can get more information of Shelter Godparenting here.

The trip to Tg-Jiu dog shelter is getting closer

Our next trip to Tg-Jiu shelter is coming closer day by day! We are leaving the 6th and returning the 10th of September. This time we are facing quite of a load of work since our goal is to deworm and give tick and flea treatments to every of the +400 dogs of the shelter. It goes without saying that these treatments against parasites are an essential part of the welfare of the dogs living in such conditions. It's also obvious that these treatments for over 400 dogs will surely cost quite much but naturally we can't afford to risk the welfare of these animals. We gladly accept donations to PAFi's account IBAN: FI08 5045 0620 0918 15 SWIFT: OKOYFIHH to cover the costs of these treatments (add a message "dewormers" or "matolääkkeet"). Sure we also welcome single-dose dewormers and tick and flea treatments (Stronghold, Frontline, Exspot) to be taken to Tg-Jiu shelter (more information of the posting This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Of course we are also welcoming volunteers to travel with us to the shelter!

Dona and Zuzu

We have already told you about the abused horse named Dona that Carmena and Patricia took under their wings to the stall built to the shelter area. In addition to Dona the women are taking care of a little pony, aged only about six months, Zuzu, that Patricia found abandoned by the road. Both of these animals have been taken to the yard across Carmena and Patricia's home since it provides a safer environment from the gipsies and the horses can freely dwell on there.

A record number of abandoned puppies

Lately people have abandoned a record number of little puppies to the shelter. In addition to this Carmena and Patricia receive tons of calls from people who wish to abandon either only puppies or puppies with their mothers. These people can't understand that the shelter is overflowing with dogs already, even the stables close to the shelter are nowadays completely packed with abandoned dogs! The situation is very hard for Carmena and Patricia who already have their hands full with the shelter dogs, horses and new rescue cases involving animal cruelty.

Carmena and her visit to Finland

Despite the fact that Carmena's days are filled efficiently with maintaining the shelter, treating animals and taking care of animal protection issues in Gorj County (not to mention her own private chores) she has had the time to think about developing the animal welfare issues of the region. In October Carmena begins to give lectures of animal protection to the students of a local university in Tg-Jiu. Carmena has also compiled a research of a subject "Animal Protection Strategies in European Countries and Romania" and even turned it into a book.

Of how the things are in Tg-Jiu and, of course, many other things you will hear more about soon since Carmena has finally arrived to Finland as our guest. We have waited for her impatiently and we hope that on her vacation she could relax for a moment so she could return to Tg-Jiu well rested. We have also reserved some time for a little meeting with all the PAFi friends. Everyone willing and able is welcome to meet up with Carmena in Luukki's dog park in Espoo on Sunday the 10th at about 1 to 3 pm (if the weather is favourable). Welcome to stop by and say hello!

Donations to Romania with the help of Mauri Ojala

Our friend, Mauri Ojala, is soon heading back to his homevillage in Romania. In his blog Mauri has told about his unfortunate friends, young Christian and an injured mother of three little children, Rodica. Together we have collected e.g. clothes and toys to be taken to these children of the village so we could somehow bring joy to their difficult lives.

The next newsletter will probably focus mostly on Carmena's long-awaited trip.

Till then, wishing you all nice end of the summer,

PAFi-team
