2008-05-03 News

After a couple of weeks of a break I have once again a lot to tell you about.

At Tg-Jiu shelter it's a busy day after another and Patricia has mostly been helping her mother in shelter chores. In Romania the Easter is not until the end of April and the only worker of the shelter, Vasile, was on a one-week-holiday.

Patricia has moved back to her mother's house and currently there's no working internet connection in Carmena's home. That's why we have communicated mostly by text messages for the past few weeks. A few days ago I talked about an hour with Patricia on the phone. For the first time she could talk about the difficult change in her life with me. I have tried not to pressure her in issues relating to the shelter or other such things right now, I have only tried to support her as a friend as much I can.

We also talked on the phone about how eagerly Carmena and Patricia would want to visit in Finland the next summer. The only way would be to do it in turns and they have already planned the trip together. Tentatively we have promised to think whether either Carmena or Patricia could travel to Finland already in June and the other either in July or August. After we have settled Carmena and Patricia's visits we can schedule our own shelter trip.

The shelter dogs are doing pretty well. Already in early-April I told you about some of the dogs urgently needing our help. Here's some update of the situation of these fellows who have had such tough luck.

Nelli has recovered from her leg injury almost completely. Nipsu's injuries are also healing and the little boy has gotten a lot of his strengths back and gotten livelier. Unfortunately there is no hope in getting Mimi's sight back, the little girl remains blind. Dona, the horse, is said to eat tons of food and she is getting stronger every day but since she has been terribly abused for a long time, the full recovery will take it's time. The other horse, Rona, is still living with her owner but Patricia and Carmena keep on fighting to get Rona under their care. The Easter holidays seem to have confused also the schedules of the authorities so the check up on Rona's situation has moved to next week. Patricia will surely send some new pictures of Nelli, Nipsu, Mimi, Dona and Rona as soon as she has fixed their internet connection and gotten some order in her life. Heartfelt thanks for all you who have donated to our Animal Protection Bank for Nelli, Nipsu, Mimi, Dona and Rona.

Our friend Mauri Ojala is returning to Romania in a week and he has promised to help at the shelter. I will meet Mauri tomorrow and we will go through some things we are hoping he could do at the shelter. One of the most important things is, of course, building the extra warehouse since every inch of extra space is really necessary now. Patricia told that the current warehouse building should be emptied of all the food sacks so it could be used only as recovery facilities for spayed and sick dogs.

We have also discussed about bringing an eco-toilet or alternatively building a traditional toilet to the shelter and Mauri said he will take care of it. Naturally I have promised to cover all the material and other costs for Mauri and his team for their help at the shelter. It is also fair to pay Mauri some kind of a bonus since he is so sincerely ready to help. Carmena and Patricia are already waiting eagerly for Mauri to arrive.

Hopefully we'll be seeing as many of you as possible on Sunday May 18th in Ideapark, Tampere, in which Faunatar and Royal Canin arrange a Match Show to support PAFi. You can enrol in advance, the entrance fee is 8 euros. Here's more information. Our Tampere-team has been tightly involved in organizing the Match Show. We want to thank greatly Faunatar of Ideapark and Royal Canin as well as our Tampere-team for making this wonderful show to happen!

On the 17th of May, a day before the Match Show, Tampere is also calling with another event, Mahdollisuuksien Tori. We are hoping to greet a lot of PAFi friends there, too!

You can check out hundreds of photos from our shelter trip in autumn (in September and November) and March from Picasa-album. You'll probably notice that there are also some funny photos since you can't really avoid having dogs jump against you and trying to get attention while taking photos. We do have deleted most of the photos with only the tips of tails if that's any comfort! J

With warm regards,

Kiia
